A 2021 critical review in Dermatologic Surgery of 42 randomised, split-body or blinded studies found radiofrequency microneedling effective for skin rejuvenation, acne scars and active acne, usable repeatedly and in darker skin phototypes, with improvement that is slow and progressive and, by the review's account, continues for up to six months after treatment (Tan et al., 2021). For acne scars, a 2023 split-face trial in 15 patients found RF microneedling and fractional CO2 laser equally effective for texture, with fewer surface reactions after RF but more discomfort during treatment (Lasers Surg Med, 2023), and a 2026 exploratory split-face study in 30 patients reported faster recovery and fewer pigment events with RF microneedling (J Dermatolog Treat, 2026).
The picture is not one-sided. A 2022 pooled analysis of 12 randomised trials with 414 participants found a significant improvement of acne scars for plain microneedling, while the fractional RF pool did not reach significance; the two methods were not compared head to head in that work (Aesthetic Plast Surg, 2022), so where scars are the only concern the doctor may propose a different tool. For mild to moderate neck laxity, a 2022 trial in 20 patients showed improvement with fractional RF microneedling alone (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2022). A 2023 review of energy-based devices in skin of colour lists RF microneedling among the useful options for acne scarring when settings are chosen for the phototype (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2023). None of these studies promises a fixed percentage of improvement, and neither do we: the response varies with skin, depth, settings and the number of sessions.
Downtime is short. Expect redness, warmth and a faint grid pattern from the pins for one to three days, sometimes with mild swelling or pinpoint scabbing that settles on its own. Keep the skin clean, skip makeup for about a day, and avoid sun, hot baths and saunas while it recovers. Daily SPF matters, since fresh treatment leaves skin more sensitive to light. Most patients are back at work the following day.
Risks and side effects. Depth raises the stakes. Pins that reach the subdermal layer carry heat further than surface microneedling, and recovery reflects that: redness, warmth, a visible grid, mild swelling and pinpoint marks or scabbing for one to three days, occasionally longer. The serious outcomes are less common but real: burns, blistering, marks that trace the pin grid, infection, a cold sore flare-up, prolonged swelling, scarring and pigment change. On skin types IV to VI, widespread in Dubai, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation heads the list; no device escapes it, and conservative settings with a test patch are the control. The US FDA issued a safety communication on 15 October 2025, “Potential Risks with Certain Uses of Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling”, reporting burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage, some needing surgical repair, and advising patients to be treated only by a licensed provider trained on the device and to ask which device will be used. A 2025 randomised split-face study of 26 patients, followed for three months, found that adding microneedle RF to focused ultrasound in the same session gave greater tightening than ultrasound alone; it tested the two technologies in general, not these two devices. The collagen built after treatment is your own tissue and ages at your normal rate, so there is no fixed expiry and no guaranteed duration. Improvement usually builds for several months after a course; how long it stays visible depends on age, sun exposure, weight change and skin care. A maintenance session is usually discussed after about a year, and the interval is individual.
In a sequence set by the doctor. PRP or exosome therapy, where indicated, is a separate procedure that the doctor may schedule around the RF session; it is not delivered through the needle channels. Botulinum toxin and filler injections are usually spaced away from the RF session rather than done on the same day, and any filler, threads or implants already in the treated area must be declared beforehand, because heat changes how they behave.
