BBL Phototherapy at MED YU MED Dubai is a Sciton BroadBand Light treatment for pigmentation, rosacea, visible vessels, acne-prone skin, photoaging and overall skin rejuvenation. BBL is often searched as “BBL laser”, but technically it is not a laser: it uses controlled broadband light to target selected chromophores in the skin, including excess pigment and visible redness.

Every BBL treatment starts with a skin consultation. The doctor checks skin type, pigmentation activity, vascular activity, acne status, recent sun exposure, tan, photosensitivity, medication use and previous procedures before choosing the light settings and treatment area. This is especially important for darker or recently tanned skin, melasma-prone skin and patients with active inflammation.
Recent tanning, very dark skin tones or active infection may delay treatment — confirmed at consultation.

BBL in Dubai targets the colour problems that build up under strong sun — brown pigment, broken capillaries, redness and the blotchy tone of photodamage. At MED YU MED it runs on the Sciton BBL module of the MJoule platform, a high-power form of BroadBand Light. BBL is IPL taken further: more output and tighter control, delivered in flashes of light that the pigment and blood vessels in the skin absorb while the surrounding tissue largely ignores them.
That fit matters in Dubai, where year-round sun drives pigmentation and facial redness. The clinician sets the filter and energy to your skin and target, so a session can lighten sun spots, calm rosacea-type redness and fade vascular marks. BBL, short for BroadBand Light, is a medical intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment rather than a laser. Where a laser emits one wavelength, BBL releases a broad band of light and uses filters to select the range that suits the target — one setting for brown pigment, another for the haemoglobin in tiny blood vessels. The light is absorbed as heat by these targets, which breaks up pigment clusters and closes off broken capillaries while sparing normal skin.
On the MJoule platform, the BBL HEROic module delivers this light at higher power with cooling at the handpiece for comfort and control. It treats the colour of sun-aged skin — pigment, redness and vascular marks — rather than its texture, which is the job of the separate MOXI laser on the same platform. The device works across a 515 to 1200 nm range, and the filter is chosen for the target: shorter wavelengths for melanin in pigment spots, the 590 to 695 nm range for haemoglobin in visible vessels, and 1200 nm for deeper heating that addresses skin quality. A sapphire cooling plate protects the surface of the skin during each pulse.

The area is cleansed, a thin gel is applied and protective eyewear is fitted. Settings are matched to your skin tone so energy stays controlled.
The handpiece delivers pulses of light across the area with cooling at the tip; most people describe a quick warm snap, like a light elastic flick. A full face takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
Pigment spots darken to a coffee-ground look for several days before they flake away. Strict sun avoidance and SPF are essential, and sessions repeat across a course.
BBL works as a course for most concerns rather than a single fix. After a session, treated pigment darkens and rises to the surface, then flakes off over one to two weeks to leave a clearer tone; redness and small vessels fade more gradually. Most pigmentation and redness plans run a series of sessions a few weeks apart, with maintenance treatments to hold the result, since sun exposure keeps driving new pigment. Lighter, more even tone usually builds across the course. The clinician sets the number of sessions to your skin and target. Pigmentation usually needs a few sessions spaced several weeks apart, and redness and vessels generally take more sessions than pigment. The clinic prices courses of three and of five plus one, and your doctor confirms the number after the first response is visible.
Downtime is short. Skin often looks flushed and feels warm for a few hours, similar to mild sunburn. Treated pigment spots turn darker and form a fine, coffee-ground crust that flakes away over several days — let it shed on its own rather than picking. Avoid sun, hot baths, saunas and strong actives for a day or two, and use daily SPF, since fresh treatment leaves skin prone to new pigmentation. Makeup can usually go on the next day. The clinic gives written aftercare.
Risks and side effects. Flushing, warmth and darkening of treated pigment spots into a fine crust that flakes over several days are expected. The risks that matter are burns and blistering, and pigment change in both directions. Broadband light targets pigment, so the darker the skin and the fresher the tan, the more energy is absorbed where it was not intended: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the main risk on skin types IV to VI, which are common in Dubai, and it can take months to fade. Melasma can be made worse rather than better. Protective eyewear is worn by everyone in the room throughout, and treatment near the eyes carries a risk of ocular injury. Tell us about photosensitising medicines such as isotretinoin, doxycycline or St John’s wort, about recent sun exposure or tanning, and about a history of cold sores, since antiviral cover is usually started before facial treatment. Moles and pigmented lesions in the area are examined by a doctor before the first session: light must never be aimed at an undiagnosed lesion, and anything suspicious is excluded and referred to a dermatologist.
When to contact us urgently. Call MED YU MED on +971 52 184 5011 (daily 10:00–22:00) if you develop a blister or an open area of skin, a burn, pain that increases rather than eases after the first day, redness and heat spreading beyond the treated area, discharge or fever, or a dark or white patch of skin that was not there before. Eye pain or any change in vision after a treatment near the eyes needs assessment the same day. Outside our opening hours, go to the nearest emergency department or call 998 for an ambulance — do not wait for the clinic to reopen.
