Four different problems, one appearance

Which kind of dark circles you have
The skin under the eye is the thinnest on the body, so everything underneath it shows: blood vessels, bone structure, the fat that sits above the cheekbone. That is why the same shadowed look has completely different causes in different faces.
The four types
- Pigmented — melanin in the skin itself, brown rather than blue. Common in darker phototypes and often inherited.
- Vascular — bluish or purple, from vessels visible through thin skin. Worse when you are tired, dehydrated or congested.
- Structural, a shadow — the tear trough hollow catches light and casts a shadow. The skin itself is a normal colour.
- Puffiness — fat pads pushing forward on the lower lid, creating a bulge with a shadow beneath it.
Most faces have two of these at once, in different proportions, which is why the plan is rarely a single procedure.
Two checks you can do at the mirror. Stretch the skin gently sideways: if the darkness fades, it is vascular or thin skin; if it stays put, it is pigment. Then move a lamp above and below your face: if the darkness shifts or vanishes, you are looking at a shadow from a hollow, not a colour. Bring the answer to the consultation — it saves time and narrows the options before anything is proposed.

What we do not offer here. Filler in the tear trough is not among the services on this site. It is a technically demanding injection in a zone where errors produce lumps, a bluish tint and swelling that lasts months. And puffiness caused by protruding fat pads is corrected surgically — no injection or device removes a fat pad. If that is what you have, you will be told rather than sold a course.
The part that is not medical
Sleep, salt, alcohol, allergies and dehydration all make existing circles look worse by increasing fluid retention and dilating vessels. Fixing them is free and sometimes enough, particularly for the vascular type.
What lifestyle will not change: inherited periorbital pigmentation, the depth of the bone structure under your eye, or how thin your skin is. Being told to drink more water when the cause is anatomical is how people lose years before anyone examines them properly.
Darker skin, different starting point
Periorbital hyperpigmentation is more common in melanin-rich skin, and the same skin is more likely to answer heat or strong light with additional pigment — in the most delicate area of the face. The route is gentler protocols, more sessions, strict sun protection between them, and a doctor prepared to refuse a device when the risk outweighs the gain.
What a course looks like
Skin-thickening work runs as a course, usually three sessions a fortnight or so apart, with the change appearing gradually as the skin builds. Pigment moves more slowly still, over months, and needs sun protection to hold.
Anything dramatic the day after an injection is swelling, not result. The honest measuring point is a photograph at month two under the same light as the first one.

Questions people ask
What is the most effective treatment for dark circles?
The one matched to their cause, and there are four common ones. Pigment responds to brightening protocols and careful light-based work. Vessels showing through thin skin need the skin thickened, not bleached. A shadow from a hollow is a question of volume and light, not colour at all. And puffiness from fat pads is surgical. One method for all four does not exist.
How can I tell which type I have?
Two quick checks the doctor will repeat properly. Stretch the skin gently sideways: if the darkness fades, it is vascular or thin skin; if it stays, it is pigment. Then change the angle of the light: if the darkness moves or disappears, you are looking at a shadow cast by a hollow rather than a colour in the skin.
Can I permanently remove dark circles?
Rarely, and it depends on the type. Pigment can be lightened and kept light with sun protection. A hollow can be improved for as long as the effect of the treatment lasts. But the anatomy that creates the shadow, the thinness of the skin and the genetics behind periorbital pigmentation do not go away, so maintenance is the realistic frame.

Will sleeping more fix them?
It will help if tiredness is part of the picture — fluid retention and vasodilation make existing circles look worse. It will not change inherited pigmentation, the depth of a tear trough or the thickness of your skin. Being told to sleep more when the cause is anatomical is how people lose years before getting a diagnosis.
Do you use filler under the eyes?
Filler in the tear trough is not among the services listed on this site, and this is a zone where poor technique produces lumps, blue discolouration and prolonged swelling. If your circles are a volume problem, the doctor will say so at the consultation and explain the options rather than improvise with a syringe.
What about eye bags?

Is treatment safe on darker skin?
It needs care. Periorbital hyperpigmentation is more common in darker phototypes, and the same skin is more likely to respond to heat or aggressive light with additional pigment. How long before I see a difference?
Polynucleotide and skin-booster courses show over several weeks as the skin thickens, typically across three sessions spaced a fortnight or so apart. Pigment fades more slowly, over months. Anything visible after a single session is usually the swelling from the injection rather than the result.
Are eye creams and LED masks worth it?
As support, yes; as a solution, no. Caffeine, peptides and vitamin K formulas can reduce puffiness and improve the look of thin skin, and consistent sun protection prevents pigment deepening. Neither adds volume under a hollow nor removes a fat pad. They earn their place between clinic sessions, not instead of them.
