What acne actually is
Acne starts when a hair follicle blocks with oil and dead skin. What grows out of that block decides what you see in the mirror: a blackhead, a whitehead, the inflamed red pimple everyone recognises, or a deep painful nodule that never comes to a head. Oily skin, congested pores and breakouts are stages of one process rather than separate conditions.
That matters for treatment, because a protocol aimed at blackheads does nothing for cystic acne, and a device aimed at inflammation can irritate skin that only needed cleaning out.
The four patterns we see most
- Comedonal — blackheads and whiteheads, little inflammation. Nose, chin, forehead. Responds to cleansing and peels.
- Inflammatory — red, sore pimples and pustules. Needs the inflammation calmed before anything mechanical.
- Nodular and cystic — deep, painful lumps that scar. This is medical dermatology, not a facial.
- Hormonal — along the jaw and lower cheeks, flaring with the cycle. Often needs prescription treatment alongside skin work.
Why skin breaks out in Dubai specifically
Patients arrive convinced their skin changed for no reason after moving here. Usually four things are stacking up.
- Air conditioning pulls water out of the skin all day, and dehydrated skin compensates by making more oil.
- Heat and sweat sit trapped under sunscreen and makeup — necessary here, but a load the barrier has to carry.
- Hard water and frequent flying disturb the barrier further.
- People react by layering strong actives from three different brands at once, which inflames rather than clears.
Before we sell you a course, the doctor goes through the routine you already have. Removing two products beats adding a fifth more often than anyone in this industry admits.

Where a cosmetology clinic stops. Our own cleansing page lists an active flare with inflamed or pustular lesions as a contraindication, and states that severe or cystic acne needs a clinical plan rather than a facial. That is not modesty — squeezing inflamed skin spreads bacteria and leaves scars. If that is what you have, the useful thing we can do is say so at the consultation and point you to medical dermatology.
Roaccutane, Accutane and prescription treatment
Isotretinoin comes up in almost every consultation about stubborn acne, so here is the straight answer: we do not prescribe it. It is a prescription medicine that needs a dermatologist, blood monitoring and strict contraception rules for women who could become pregnant. Clinics that treat it casually are doing their patients no favours.
What we can do is handle everything around it — the skin work that keeps the barrier intact during a course, and the post-acne marks afterwards.
Acne on the back, chest and shoulders
Body acne is not facial acne scaled up. The skin is thicker, the follicles are bigger, and sweat under clothing in this climate keeps the area occluded for hours. Mechanical back cleansing costs 1000 AED and the décolleté can be added to a facial protocol for 1000 AED. Expect a course rather than one session, and expect it to move slower than the face.
The marks left behind
Two different problems get called scarring. Flat brown or red marks are post-inflammatory pigmentation — they fade over months on their own, and treatment speeds that up. Indented or raised scars are structural and need resurfacing.

How long it takes, honestly
The American Academy of Dermatology puts improvement at four to six weeks and complete clearing at three to four months for most people. Skin frequently looks slightly worse in the first fortnight as blocked follicles clear — that is expected, not failure.
The AAD is equally clear on the other end: if weeks of treatment change nothing, the next step is a dermatologist, not another course of sessions.

Which is best for acne treatment?
There is no single best method, because acne is several different problems wearing one name. Blackheads and congestion respond to cleansing and peels. Inflammatory breakouts often need light-based work or the Fotona protocol. Hormonal acne along the jaw frequently needs prescription medicine that a cosmetology clinic cannot provide. The method follows the diagnosis, not the other way round.
What is the most effective treatment for acne?
For severe nodular and cystic acne the strongest evidence sits with prescription systemic therapy, isotretinoin among it — and that is a dermatologist’s territory, with blood tests and monitoring, not a clinic procedure. For mild to moderate breakouts a combination of in-clinic sessions and a correct home routine does most of the work. We will tell you which of the two cases you are in.
