Unwanted Hair in Dubai: Causes and Treatment

Sometimes the hair is the problem, sometimes it is the messenger

Most unwanted hair is ordinary and responds well to a laser course. A smaller share is new, coarse, male-pattern growth that appeared over months — and that is worth investigating before any device is booked, because the treatment removes the hair without touching the cause.

Two different situations, one complaint

Ordinary unwanted hair

Hair that has always grown on your legs, underarms, bikini line, arms or upper lip, at a stable amount, is a cosmetic matter. Genetics and ethnicity set the density; nothing is wrong. A laser course usually reduces it substantially, and the rest is maintenance.

Hair that is new or changing

Coarse, dark hair appearing in a male pattern — chin, jawline, upper lip, chest, abdomen, inner thighs — especially if it developed over months, sits in a different category. Polycystic ovary syndrome and other hormonal conditions are among the recognised causes, as are some medicines. Hair removal still works on it, but treating only the hair leaves the cause running.

The practical rule we use: if the growth is new, rapid, or comes with irregular periods, acne, hair thinning on the scalp or weight change, you are advised to see a physician or endocrinologist alongside the course. We say that at the consultation rather than after you have bought a package.

What a laser can and cannot target. The light is absorbed by pigment in the hair, so dark hair responds and grey, white, red or very fine blond hair largely does not — a device that works through pigment cannot target hair that has none. Hair also has to be in its growth phase to respond, which is why a course of sessions weeks apart exists in the first place.

How the methods compare

Method What it does Honest limits
Laser hair removal Damages the follicle through pigment; long-term reduction in density and thickness across a course Needs dark hair; a course of sessions; maintenance later; not effective on grey or very fair hair
Waxing and sugaring Removes hair from the root, smooth for weeks Regrowth returns in full; repeated trauma can cause ingrown hairs and irritation
Shaving and depilatory creams Cheap, immediate, done at home Days, not weeks; irritation and ingrown hairs in friction zones
Electrolysis Treats individual follicles regardless of colour, including grey hair Slow, session by session; not offered at this clinic

Shaving between laser sessions is expected and does not affect the course. Waxing, plucking and threading do, because they remove the target the laser needs — those are stopped four weeks before the first session and for the duration of the course.

What it costs here

Single zones start at 100 AED for temples, 120 AED for the chin and 150 AED for the upper lip, with underarms at 250 AED, classic bikini at 300 AED, full legs at 800 AED and a full face at 350 AED. Packages combine several zones: the Lite package covering deep bikini and underarms is 600 AED per session, and full body with face is 1800 AED. Courses of three and five-plus-one are priced lower per session.

Skin tone matters more than it is usually presented. Darker phototypes carry more pigment in the skin as well as the hair, which raises the risk of burns and post-inflammatory pigmentation if settings are wrong. Parameters are chosen for your phototype, a test patch is standard where there is doubt, and recent sun exposure or a fresh tan postpones the session. This is routine practice in a city where most patients have some sun exposure year-round.

Ingrown hairs, irritation and the reason they happen

Hairs that curl back into the skin produce bumps, darkening and sometimes infection, and they are most common in coarse, curly hair and in friction zones: bikini line, underarms, beard area, nape. Shaving and waxing both feed the cycle.

Reducing hair density is what usually helps most over time — fewer and finer hairs mean fewer ingrowns. In the meantime, gentle exfoliation and loose clothing reduce recurrence. A bump that is hot, painful and spreading is an infection and needs medical assessment, not exfoliation.

Who this suits, and who should wait

A laser course suits you if

  • The hair is dark enough for the light to target
  • You can commit to sessions weeks apart rather than one visit
  • You can avoid sun exposure and self-tan around each session
  • You accept maintenance sessions after the main course

Investigate or postpone if

  • Hair is new, coarse and in a male pattern — see a physician about hormones
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • There is active infection, inflammation or an open area in the zone
  • You are taking a photosensitising medicine, or finished isotretinoin recently
  • You have a fresh tan or sunburn in the treatment area

This list is not exhaustive. Previous laser burns, keloid scarring, skin conditions and some medicines change the plan. Final suitability is determined by a clinician at an in-person assessment.

Before the package, one question: why is it growing?

For most people the answer is genetics and the course starts. For some it is hormonal, and the course still starts — with a referral alongside it, so the treatment is not fighting something that keeps producing new hair.

Questions people ask

How many sessions do I need to get rid of unwanted hair?

Six to ten sessions for most zones, spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the area, because only hair in its growth phase responds to each pass. Hormonally driven growth on the face usually needs more sessions and periodic maintenance. The doctor gives you a range for your zone after seeing the hair.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The industry term is permanent hair reduction, and it means long-term reduction rather than removal. A completed course usually reduces the number of hairs substantially and makes what remains finer and lighter. Follicles that were dormant can activate later, particularly with hormonal change such as pregnancy or menopause, so maintenance sessions are part of the picture. Any clinic promising permanent removal is overstating what the technology does.

Does it work on dark skin?

Yes, with the right settings. Our platform works at 755 nm with the Moveo in-motion technique, which the manufacturer describes as suitable for hair removal across Fitzpatrick skin types including tanned skin. Darker skin carries more pigment that competes with the hair for the light, so parameters, a test patch where there is doubt and the interval between sessions are set for your phototype. Recent sun exposure or a fresh tan postpones the session regardless of your baseline tone.

Why do I suddenly have hair on my chin?

New coarse hair on the chin, jaw or upper lip can reflect hormonal change — polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the recognised causes in younger women, and the hormonal shift around menopause is another later on. Some medicines do it too. The hair can be treated cosmetically at the same time as the cause is investigated; what we advise against is treating only the hair and assuming the question is closed.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes — shaving is the recommended method during a course, and the area is shaved before each session. Waxing, sugaring, plucking and threading are stopped four weeks before the first session and throughout, because they remove the follicle content the laser needs to work on.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a hot snap with each pulse, strongest on the bikini line, upper lip and areas over bone. Contact cooling runs through the session and settings are adjusted to what you can tolerate. No injected anaesthetic is used.

What about ingrown hairs?

Reducing density is what usually helps most over time, since fewer and finer hairs curl back less. Between sessions, gentle exfoliation and avoiding tight clothing help. A bump that becomes hot, painful or spreads is treated as an infection and needs to be seen rather than exfoliated.

Can I have laser treatment while pregnant?

We do not treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Safety data in pregnancy is limited and hormonal changes make results unpredictable, so the course is planned for afterwards.

What are the side effects?

Redness and slight swelling around the follicles for a few hours is normal. Less commonly there is temporary darkening or lightening of the skin, and rarely a burn or blister where settings or recent sun exposure were wrong. Report blistering, an open area, spreading redness with heat or fever to the clinic the same day; outside our hours, go to the nearest emergency department.

Medical disclaimer: this page is for information and does not replace a consultation. New or rapidly increasing coarse hair growth should be assessed by a physician, since it can reflect a hormonal condition that hair removal does not treat.
