The short answer
Expect swollen, tender lips for the first few days. In the US patient labeling for one hyaluronic acid lip filler, bruising, swelling and tenderness usually go away within one to two weeks, while lumps can last longer. In the first 24 hours, cool the area, go easy on exercise and heat, and avoid touching the lips while they are numb. Your doctor sets the exact schedule for your treatment and tells you when to call.
What the first two weeks usually look like
Lip filler aftercare is mostly about waiting while the tissue calms down. The timings below are general guides from the sources listed at the end. Your own course can be faster or slower, and the doctor may adjust it after seeing your lips.
| Period | What is typical | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | Lips look fuller than the final result; tenderness, redness and firmness | Cold compress, no touching for the first six hours, less exercise and heat |
| Days 2 to 3 | Swelling is usually at its most marked, according to the clinic’s treatment page; bruises can appear | Keep avoiding heat and pressure; do not judge the shape yet |
| About one week | Swelling settles for most people; small lumps often soften, but some last longer | Normal routine, with a gentle hand around the lips |
| Up to two weeks | Bruising fades; the shape becomes clearer | A review with your doctor if you were told to expect one |
| After two weeks | Reactions that persist are a reason to call, according to the US labeling; lumps can linger up to 30 days | Call your doctor |
The lip filler treatment at the clinic page says the final shape is judged at two to four weeks, which is why it advises against treatment just before a wedding or photoshoot. This guide adds detail on what to do day by day and what counts as normal.
The labeling gives one more useful reference point. In the study behind it, 185 people received the filler and kept a 30-day diary of side effects, and touch-up injections were given as needed after four weeks. The clinic’s page follows a similar logic: review at two weeks, final shape judged at two to four weeks.
What to do in the first 24 hours
The Restylane Kysse patient labeling, which is published on the US FDA site, gives a practical starting list for the hours after treatment.
- Apply a clean cloth dipped in cold water and wrung out to the lips right after treatment to reduce swelling.
- Do not touch the treated area for six hours, because the numbing means you can injure the skin without feeling it. After that, wash it gently with soap and water.
- Minimise strenuous exercise and exposure to heat, sun and UV lamps for the first 24 hours, since these can cause temporary redness, swelling or itching.
The clinic’s treatment page adds saunas, hot drinks and alcohol to the 24-hour list and asks you to avoid pressing or puckering hard so the filler settles as shaped. Follow your doctor’s care notes first where they differ from a general list.
What to avoid, and for how long
The same labeling says to avoid aspirin, NSAIDs, St. John’s Wort, blood thinners and high doses of vitamin E for one week after treatment, because they may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Do not stop any prescribed medicine on your own. Ask your doctor before treatment which medicines matter for you.
The labeling also advises avoiding intense cold or heat, such as sun lamps or sunbathing, until redness and swelling have gone. In a hot climate that means shade and cooler rooms for the first days. The clinic’s page lists dental work within two weeks before or after lip filler as a reason to postpone, so plan dental visits around your appointment.
Tell your doctor about any laser, peel, microneedling or hair removal near the mouth. The labeling says combining these with filler may lead to inflammation.

Swelling, bruising and lumps: what is expected
The clinic’s page says lips swell more than almost any other area, and swelling is one of the usual reactions. The labeling lists redness, pain or tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps or bumps, bruising, itching and discoloration as the usual injection-site responses. Most of them resolve on their own.
Swelling. Cold compresses help in the first hours. The clinic’s treatment page describes the swelling as most marked on the first two to three days and settling over about a week.
Bruising. Pinpoint bruises at the injection sites are common. The labeling expects them to fade within one to two weeks, and the clinic’s page allows up to two weeks.
Lumps. Small lumps can be felt in the first week as the gel settles. The clinic’s page says they typically soften. In the trial diaries, lumps and bumps lasted 15 to 30 days in about half of the people who reported them (FDA summary, Table 8). Your doctor tells you which lumps to watch. The clinic’s page also says that a lump that is hot, red, painful or growing is not normal at any point. A 2023 review in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery groups lip filler complications by timing: immediate (within 24 hours), early (24 hours to four weeks) and late or delayed (more than four weeks after injection), and names infection and delayed-onset nodules among the problems that need medical care. The FDA also notes that side effects can appear weeks, months or even years after an injection. A lump that persists or appears late needs a doctor, not more waiting. The guide to lip filler safety, migration and lumps covers these complications in more depth.
The labeling adds that cold sores can return after lip filler if you have had them before. Tell your doctor about any history of cold sores before treatment, since the clinic’s page says antiviral cover is usually started beforehand.
When to call your doctor, even if it seems minor
The US labeling lists reasons to call the doctor, some of them urgent and some not. Call if reactions such as bruising, swelling, pain, tenderness, redness or itching persist beyond 14 days, if blisters or sores recur, if you see signs of infection such as fever, spreading redness, drainage or increasing tenderness, if you have significant pain away from the injection site, or if any side effect appears weeks or months after treatment. Call about any symptom that worries you. The urgent signs are in the next section.
When to seek urgent help
Contact the clinic immediately if you notice whitening or a pale patch on the lip or nearby skin, mottled, blue or dark skin, pain that grows stronger instead of easing, changes in vision, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or signs of infection. The clinic does not operate around the clock. With a vascular sign, a change in vision or trouble breathing or swallowing, call 998 or go to the nearest emergency department at once. The clinic’s page says results are better when treatment starts within the first hours.
Frequently asked questions
Does lip filler swelling go down?
Yes. Swelling after lip filler is expected and usually settles without treatment. The clinic’s page describes it as most marked over the first two to three days and easing over about a week. If lips are still clearly swollen after 14 days, or swelling increases, contact your doctor.
How long does lip filler bruising last?
Bruising at the injection points typically fades within one to two weeks, according to the US patient labeling and the clinic’s page. Avoiding aspirin, NSAIDs and similar medicines for a week after treatment, as that labeling advises, may reduce it. Your doctor confirms which medicines apply to you.
Are lumps normal after lip filler?
Lumps are common in the first week, and many soften as the gel settles. In one US trial, about half of the people who had them logged lumps lasting 15 to 30 days. A lump that is hot, red, painful or growing needs a doctor at any time. So does one that lingers past two weeks or appears weeks or months later.
Can I kiss or touch my lips after lip filler?
The US labeling says not to touch the treated area for six hours because numbness hides injury. The clinic’s page asks you to avoid pressing or puckering hard. Ask your doctor how long to keep contact gentle for your treatment.
Can I exercise or drink alcohol after lip filler?
Not straight away. The US labeling advises minimising strenuous exercise, heat and sun for the first 24 hours, and the clinic’s page adds saunas, hot drinks and alcohol for that period. Your doctor may give a longer or shorter list for your situation.
Does lip filler have downtime?
There is no hospital-style recovery, but visible swelling and possible bruising mean the lips look different for days. The clinic’s page says most people return to work the same or next day. The clinic’s page advises scheduling lip filler at least three to four weeks before an event.
