Masseter Botox in Dubai: may slim a wide lower face and ease jaw clenching
Botulinum toxin injected into the masseter, the main chewing muscle, lowers how hard that muscle can contract. Over repeated treatments an enlarged masseter usually loses bulk, which can narrow the lower third of the face and ease the load of jaw clenching. What masseter Botox does
The masseter runs from the cheekbone to the angle of the lower jaw. You use it every time you chew, and many people also tighten it without noticing when they concentrate or feel stress. In some people the muscle becomes enlarged. Clenching and grinding are commonly linked to this, but often there is no clear cause.
Botulinum toxin type A blocks the signal that tells the muscle to contract. A measured dose placed in the masseter weakens its pull for a few months. Two things can follow. The force of the clench drops, which may ease a tired, tight jaw. And with repeated treatments the less-used muscle usually shrinks, so the lower face may look narrower. Both effects are temporary. When the toxin wears off, the muscle returns to its usual activity.
We treat the muscle, not the habit. Stress, sleep and the bite stay as they were, and a dentist remains the right person for worn or sensitive teeth.
This is an off-label use. In the US prescribing information for Botox Cosmetic the approved indications are the glabellar lines between the brows, lateral canthal lines (crow’s feet), forehead lines and platysma bands. The same document states: “The safety and effectiveness of BOTOX for unapproved uses have not been established.” The masseter is not on the approved list. Your doctor explains this, together with the expected benefit and the risks, before you decide.
Who it suits: muscle width versus bone width
A wide lower face has more than one cause. The assessment separates them, because injections act on the muscle and do not narrow a wide jaw bone.
Masseter Botox may help if
- The masseter is visibly or palpably enlarged, and feels firm and bulging when you clench
- You want a narrower lower third of the face and accept a repeated, temporary treatment
- You clench your jaw and the muscle feels tight or tired
- A dentist has already dealt with protection of your teeth
It will not help much, or needs another specialist first, if
- The width comes from the jaw bone itself
- Teeth are chipped, worn or sensitive, which is dental work
- The joint in front of the ear locks, clicks painfully or limits how far you can open
- Pain is severe, one-sided or came on suddenly

How a visit goes
Assessment. The doctor looks at your face from the front and side, feels the masseter while you clench, and asks about clenching, headaches, dental history, medicines and any earlier botulinum toxin treatment. Tell the doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular disorder, or take blood thinners or certain antibiotics.
Plan. The doctor chooses the product and the injection points. The number of units and the points depend on the size and strength of your muscle, so they are set after the assessment and differ from person to person. The clinic works with Botox, Dysport and Nabota. Units of these products are not interchangeable and cannot be converted into each other.
Injection and aftercare. Under UAE law botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine, and only a licensed doctor injects it. The doctor places measured units into the muscle on both sides with a fine needle. The visit usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Most people return to normal activity the same day. Do not rub or massage the treated area, and avoid intense sport, saunas and hot baths for about 24 hours.
Results and how long they last
The effect begins within about a week and builds over two to three weeks. The change in face shape is slower than the change in clenching force, because the muscle has to lose bulk, and it usually needs more than one treatment.
The effect is temporary. The doctor sets your repeat interval after seeing how you responded. The US prescribing information for Botox Cosmetic says that dosing more often than every three months has not been clinically evaluated, so we do not repeat treatment sooner than that. Results vary between individuals, and no outcome is guaranteed.
What the evidence shows, and what it does not
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (Machado et al., Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery) looked at botulinum toxin for masseter hypertrophy. It found short-term benefit over placebo with nominal regimens of 48 and 72 units in the trials it pooled, and it concluded that the evidence was insufficient to define a dose-response relationship across products or an optimal protocol. Those figures describe trial regimens. They are not our dosing, and we do not publish unit ranges by zone, because your dose depends on your muscle.
A 2024 randomized, triple-blinded trial (de Souza Nobre et al., Scientific Reports) used abobotulinumtoxinA, the active ingredient of Dysport. It reported that multiple injections into the masseter were associated with functional adverse effects of the chewing muscle. This is one reason the doctor reviews how you responded before deciding whether and when to repeat treatment.
Get urgent help, do not wait for the clinic to reopen. If you have difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, or muscle weakness beyond the treated area, even weeks after the injection, call 998 or go straight to the nearest emergency department and tell them you had botulinum toxin injections and when. Botulinum therapy is priced per unit, and the doctor decides how many units you need after assessing the muscle. We therefore do not quote a fixed price for the procedure. You receive the total for your dose before anything is injected.

Risks, side effects and who should not have it
Common effects are small injection marks, redness, swelling, bruising and headache in the days afterwards. Effects specific to the masseter are temporary weakness when chewing, a change in your smile if the toxin spreads to neighbouring muscles, and asymmetry. These usually settle as the effect wears off.
Treatment is not performed in these situations:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Recent botulinum toxin injections in the same area, unless the doctor approves the timing
- Age under 18
- A neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome
- Active infection, inflammation, open wounds or herpes in the treatment area
- Known allergy to botulinum toxin or any component of the product
- Active cancer or ongoing cancer treatment
- Blood clotting disorders or anticoagulants, and aminoglycoside antibiotics, unless the doctor approves

A 2024 randomized trial with abobotulinumtoxinA reported functional adverse effects of the masseter after multiple injections, so the doctor reviews your response before any repeat treatment.
When should I seek urgent help after the injection?
Call 998 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, muscle weakness beyond the treated area, or double vision or any change in vision, and tell staff you had botulinum toxin injections. The clinic is open daily 10:00–22:00 and is not open around the clock.
