When to schedule hyaluronic acid injections: before your flight to shield your face, or after you return to restore heat-parched skin? A quick search online will yield hundreds of conflicting opinions on the subject.
To make the right decision, you need to understand what actually happens to your cells and how your skin tissues react to the sun.
Why Does the Sun Destroy Hyaluronic Acid?
Active sun exposure triggers photoaging (the premature aging of the skin caused by UV radiation). UVA and UVB rays penetrate deep into the dermis, where our foundational collagen is. When exposed to the sun, the tissues experience a massive surge in free radicals: aggressive molecules that damage and destroy cell membranes.
First and foremost, UV radiation rapidly evaporates the skin’s natural reserves of hyaluronic acid and breaks down elastin fibers. Your fibroblasts enter a state of oxidative stress and temporarily stop the production of new protein. This is exactly why, even among younger patients, a two-week beach vacation often results in fine wrinkles around the eyes and a noticeable loss of natural skin elasticity.
Why Do Biorevitalization Before Your Vacation?
Many people mistakenly assume that getting injections before a beach trip is pointless because the sun will dry out the skin anyway. From a medical standpoint, the reality is just the opposite. Pre-vacation biorevitalization is not merely about hydration. It is about building a powerful biological shield.
Modern skin boosters such as Novocutan YBio/SBio, Revi Silk, or Bellarti Amino, contain not only hyaluronic acid, but also a complex of amino acids, antioxidants, and trehalose. They deliver essential nutrients directly into the cells, creating a reliable moisture reservoir and boosting the tissue’s resilience against UV rays.
Therefore, biorevitalization BEFORE a vacation provides:
- Protection against oxidative stress: The antioxidants within the formulations neutralize free radicals in real-time while you tan, protecting your cellular DNA from damage.
- Preservation of skin turgor: An internal reservoir of moisture prevents the epidermis (the surface layer of the skin) from thinning out due to intense heat, saltwater, and airplane cabin air conditioning.
- Pigmentation prevention: Healthy, deeply hydrated skin produces melanin (dark pigment) much more calmly and evenly, preventing the formation of stubborn sunspots.
Important Note: It is best to schedule this procedure 10 to 14 days before your flight. This window is essential to allow the papules (the small bumps where the product is introduced) to resolve completely and to ensure that no UV-triggered pigmentation occurs at the injection sites.
Why Do Biorevitalization After Your Vacation?
Even if you religiously apply a high-SPF sunscreen, preventing 100% of moisture loss is virtually impossible. After returning from a hot climate, skin tissues are frequently left in a state of depletion. The stratum corneum thickens as a defense mechanism against the sun, resulting in hyperkeratosis (excessive surface scaling), flakiness, and a tight, uncomfortable sensation.
In this scenario, injections act as an intensive rehabilitation protocol. Formulas like NCTF 135 HA or Profhilo instantly resuscitate fatigued cells. By delivering hyaluronic acid directly into the dermis, they help the body recover from thermal stress much faster.
Therefore, biorevitalization AFTER a vacation provides:
- Emergency moisture replenishment: The formulas instantly eliminate dryness and flakiness while smoothing out fine dehydration lines.
- Kickstarting regeneration: Hyaluronic acid stimulates fibroblasts, accelerating the natural healing and repair of damaged collagen fibers.
- Restoring your glow: By re-establishing proper water balance and cellular respiration, the treatment banishes dull, gray undertones and restores a fresh, rested, and healthy complexion.
Keep in Mind: Your post-beach clinic visit should also be scheduled 10 to 14 days after your return. Tissues need adequate time to calm down after active sun exposure and potential micro-burns.
Which Option Should You Choose?
In aesthetic medicine, there are no rigid templates or universally mandated rules. The optimal timing depends entirely on the baseline condition of your skin and the climate of your destination.
For patients with fair, thin, or chronically dry skin, one option a doctor may suggest is a two-step course, sometimes called a sandwich protocol. This involves a two-step course: one session is performed two weeks before departure to build a protective shield, and the second is performed two weeks after returning for deep tissue restoration. The aim is to support skin condition around the trip. Results differ between people, and no protocol guarantees an outcome.
If time is limited and you can only commit to a single visit, your doctor will assess your immediate deficits. If your skin is already significantly dehydrated, it is best to do the procedure before you leave. If you are taking a short trip to a mild climate, the treatment can comfortably be postponed until after you return.

Risks of injectable skin boosters
Papules usually flatten within 24 to 72 hours, but they can stay visible for up to a week, and
bruising lasts longer, particularly around the eyes. Other risks: swelling, infection at an injection
point, allergic reaction and, rarely, injection into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin and,
very rarely, affect vision. The under-eye area carries the highest risk of vascular complications and
prolonged swelling, which is why it is treated only after assessment and is not suitable for everyone.
When the treatment is not done
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Active skin infection, inflammation or herpes at the injection site
- Known allergy to hyaluronic acid or injection components
- Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy, after doctor assessment
- Autoimmune or uncontrolled chronic conditions, after doctor assessment
- Tendency to keloid scarring
This list is not exhaustive. Other conditions, medicines and previous treatments may also rule the treatment out or change the plan. Final suitability is determined by a clinician at an in-person assessment.
If something goes wrong afterwards
Call MED YU MED on +971 52 184 5011, daily 10:00-22:00, if you develop a blister, a burn or an open area of skin, pain that increases rather than eases, spreading redness with heat, or a fever. Any change in vision needs assessment the same day. Outside our opening hours go to the nearest emergency department or call 998 for an ambulance, rather than waiting for the clinic to reopen. The clinic does not operate 24 hours.
