PRP Treatment in Dubai — How Platelet-Rich Plasma Works

Autologous platelet-rich plasma treatments administered by DHA-licensed physicians at MED YU MED on Bluewaters Island.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses a concentration of the patient’s own platelets — drawn from a small blood sample and processed via two-stage centrifugation — to deliver growth factors directly to the treatment area. Because PRP is autologous (derived from the patient’s own blood), the risk of allergic reaction is eliminated. At MED YU MED Dubai, PRP is prepared using a closed, sterile system. A blood draw of 10-20 ml is processed in a calibrated centrifuge to produce a platelet concentration approximately 3-5 times baseline. The resulting plasma is either injected (for hair and under-eye treatments) or applied topically in conjunction with microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling.PRP facial (sometimes referred to as vampire facial) combines PRP application with microneedling to enhance dermal penetration and stimulate collagen remodelling. PRP hair restoration involves intradermal injection across the scalp to support follicular health in patients experiencing early-to-moderate hair thinning.Clinical indications: skin texture improvement, fine-line reduction, under-eye hollowing, androgenetic alopecia (hair loss), diffuse thinning, post-procedure healing support. Contraindications include platelet dysfunction syndromes, anticoagulant therapy, active infection, and certain haematological conditions. Full medical history is taken at consultation.A course of 3-4 sessions is generally recommended for skin and hair indications, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, with maintenance sessions thereafter. Individual response varies depending on platelet count, treatment area, and underlying condition. Results may vary. Consultation with a licensed physician is required before treatment.

How PRP works

Platelets are a natural part of the blood’s repair system. When tissue is injured, platelets aggregate and release growth factors — including PDGF, VEGF, TGF-β and IGF-1 — that signal tissue repair, collagen synthesis and angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation).

Concentrating these platelets and introducing them into a target area at therapeutic concentration amplifies the repair signal. In skin, this translates to improved texture, firmness and hydration. In hair follicles, PRP supports the anagen (active growth) phase.

PRP applications at MED YU MED

  • Skin rejuvenation — fine lines, crepiness, early laxity, loss of glow
  • Acne scars — atrophic scars, post-acne texture (combined with microneedling)
  • Under-eye hollowing — volume and skin quality improvement
  • Hair loss — scalp injections to support follicle health and density (see PRP hair treatment)
  • Post-procedure enhancement — applied after microneedling or Morpheus8 for synergistic effect

What to expect — the session

  • Blood draw: 10–20 ml from the arm (standard venipuncture)
  • Centrifuge: 8–15 minutes to separate and concentrate platelets
  • Preparation: topical numbing cream applied while blood processes
  • Injection or microneedling application: 30–40 minutes
  • Total session: approximately 60–75 minutes
  • No synthetic products are injected — only your own processed blood

Before and after care

  • Before: no alcohol or blood thinners for 48 h; drink normally and eat before the appointment; no NSAIDs unless medically required
  • After: mild redness and swelling normal for 24–48 h; apply SPF 50; avoid heat and exercise for 24 h; skip retinoids and actives for 5 days

  • Combination protocols available — PRP can be combined with microneedling or RF microneedling for enhanced clinical outcomes.

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

Step Description
1 — Consultation Physician consultation to confirm indication, review medical history, exclude contraindications (coagulation disorders, active infection, anticoagulant use), and set realistic expectations.
2 — Blood Draw 10-20 ml of blood drawn from the patient’s antecubital vein under sterile conditions. Sample processed immediately via two-stage centrifugation to isolate platelet-rich plasma.
3 — Treatment PRP injected intradermally or subdermally to the treatment area (hair, face, under-eye) OR applied topically with simultaneous microneedling. Duration 30-60 minutes.
4 — Follow-up Review after 4-6 weeks. Course typically 3-4 sessions. Maintenance schedule discussed based on clinical response.

FAQ

What is PRP treatment and how does it work?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is prepared from a small sample of your own blood. Centrifugation concentrates platelets and their growth factors, which are then re-introduced to the target area to stimulate tissue regeneration and collagen production.

Is PRP treatment safe?
Because PRP uses the patient’s own blood, the risk of allergic reaction to the PRP component is eliminated. As with any injectable treatment, there are risks of bruising, swelling, and infection at injection sites. All procedures at MED YU MED are performed by DHA-licensed physicians under sterile conditions.
How many PRP sessions do I need for hair loss?
Most protocols recommend 3-4 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for androgenetic alopecia, followed by maintenance sessions every 4-6 months. Individual response varies and will be assessed at consultation.
What is the difference between a PRP facial and a vampire facial?
Vampire facial is a colloquial term for PRP facial — specifically the combination of PRP application with microneedling. At MED YU MED, both terms refer to the same procedure: topical PRP applied during or after microneedling to enhance dermal penetration.
Is there downtime after PRP treatment?
PRP facial with microneedling typically involves 24-48 hours of redness and minor swelling. PRP hair treatment may cause mild scalp tenderness for 24 hours. Sun protection and avoidance of intense exercise for 24 hours are advised post-treatment.
