LED Therapy in Dubai — How Photobiomodulation Works

HELEO PRO 630nm and 830nm photobiomodulation — clinical LED treatment at Bluewaters Island.

LED (Light-Emitting Diode) therapy, also known as Photobiomodulation (PBMT), uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with cellular chromophores and trigger photochemical reactions in tissue. At MED YU MED Dubai, LED treatments are delivered using the HELEO PRO medical-grade LED panel, which combines 630nm red light (anti-inflammatory, stimulates fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis) with 830nm near-infrared (NIR) light for deeper tissue penetration and cellular repair. LED therapy is non-thermal and non-ablative, making it suitable as a standalone treatment or as a post-procedure adjunct after laser, microneedling or injectables to reduce inflammation and accelerate healing. It is indicated for active acne vulgaris, post-inflammatory redness, wound healing support, and general skin quality improvement. LED therapy is distinct from PDT (photodynamic therapy) and does not involve photosensitising agents unless specifically prescribed. Individual results vary.

How it works

  • Red light (630 nm) — stimulates fibroblasts and collagen synthesis; anti-inflammatory
  • Near-infrared (830 nm) — penetrates deeper tissue; mitochondrial activation, cellular repair
  • Photobiomodulation: light triggers ATP production in cells without heat generation
  • No UV, no ablation, no downtime — suitable for all skin types

Protocol at MED YU MED

  • Session duration: 20–30 minutes under the panel
  • Standalone maintenance: 4–8 sessions spaced weekly; monthly maintenance thereafter
  • Post-procedure add-on: immediately after microneedling, peel or laser to reduce recovery time
  • Rosacea / inflammatory protocol: 2–3 sessions per week for 4 weeks
  • No preparation required; remove makeup before session

Aftercare

  • No downtime — return to normal activity immediately
  • Apply SPF 50 if going outdoors after treatment
  • Mild warmth during session is normal; no heat sensation after

FAQ

What is the difference between LED therapy and laser treatment?

LED therapy (PBMT) uses low-level, non-thermal light to stimulate cellular activity. Laser treatments use coherent light at higher energy to ablate, resurface or coagulate tissue. LED is non-ablative and non-thermal — it does not damage skin and has no downtime

How many LED sessions are recommended?

For acne management or skin rejuvenation, a course of 6-10 sessions (2-3 per week) is typically recommended. As a post-procedure adjunct, 2-4 sessions are usual. Your practitioner will advise based on your treatment plan.

Is LED therapy the same as photodynamic therapy (PDT)?

No. Standard LED therapy uses light without a photosensitising agent. PDT combines a topical or systemic photosensitiser with light activation to destroy target cells. PDT is a separate medical procedure requiring physician prescription.

Is LED therapy suitable for all skin types?

LED therapy is non-thermal and generally safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types I-VI. It is one of the few aesthetic treatments with no downtime. Contraindications include active epilepsy triggered by light, photosensitising medications and pregnancy (consult physician).
